To have a healthy community you must take a community approach to health. A child with asthma can be treated by the best doctor in the world, but if that child returns to a home with mold, medical assistance alone will not cure their malady.

Rural Neighborhoods is ardent in its support of the Fair Housing Alliance’s mission. Few changes in Immokalee are more critical than building safe, decent homes that draw parents and children from the squalor of dilapidated trailers. It is shameful 1 in 4 families go home each night to overcrowded mobile

homes that are unlikely to stand up to the next tropical storm and command higher rents than traditional apartments.

“The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has long-standing partnerships with organizations in Immokalee that are addressing the systemic issues that have unjustly impacted farmworkers and other low-income residents. Hurricane Irma once again revealed the presence of unsafe and substandard housing. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), a program of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), joined the effort to address this issue to ensure that safe, hurricane-resistant and affordable housing is possible for farmworker families, whose essential labor makes it possible to have a reliable and sustainable food system.”

Jim Kirk, Executive Director, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

“Housing has been a major issue in Immokalee since the 1980s if not before.   In the 26 years I have been spending time there, singing to little children and in the church choir, and writing books and music, I have seen little in the way of progress.  Farmworker and packinghouse workers still rent trailers and apartments, many of which are sub-standard.   The colorful new Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance housing project will go a long way to address this pressing need and the community will benefit greatly from it.”
